How to Prepare for Your Lab Test: A Step-by-Step Guide for Accurate Results
You've done the important thing: you've scheduled your health checkup or diagnostic test. Now, a simple question pops into your head: "What do I need to do before I go?"
It's a common and crucial question. How you prepare can significantly impact the accuracy of your test results. Showing up incorrectly prepared can lead to inconclusive readings, the need for re-tests, and unnecessary delays in your diagnosis.
Don't worry—we've got you covered. This comprehensive guide walks you through the standard preparations for the most common lab tests. Always follow the specific instructions given by your doctor or our team, but use this as your reliable reference.
Why Preparation Matters: The Science of Accuracy
Your body is a dynamic system. What you eat, drink, and do in the hours before a test can temporarily change your body chemistry.
- Food & Drink: A meal can raise blood sugar, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels. Certain foods can affect urine content.
- Medications & Supplements: Some can interfere with test assays.
- Activity: Strenuous exercise can elevate muscle enzymes and other markers.
- Stress: Even anxiety can influence certain hormone levels.
Proper preparation minimizes these variables, giving your doctor a true baseline of your health.
General Rules of Thumb
- Always Confirm Instructions: When you book at Biocheck, our staff will provide specific preparation guidelines for your tests. Listen carefully and ask if you're unsure.
- Fasting Means No Food or Drink (Except Water): Typically, this means no food, coffee, tea, juice, or soda for 8-12 hours before your test. Plain water is usually allowed and encouraged to stay hydrated.
- Medications: Do NOT stop any prescription medication unless explicitly instructed by your doctor. Inform us about all medications and supplements you are taking.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose loose-fitting clothes, especially if you're having a scan or blood pressure check. Sleeves that can be easily rolled up are a plus.
Test-Specific Preparation Guide
For Blood Tests
- Fasting Blood Glucose, Lipid Profile, Renal Function Tests: Fasting required. Usually 10-12 hours of fasting. Water is okay.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC), Thyroid Tests (T3/T4/TSH), Vitamin Tests: Fasting may or may not be required. Confirm with your instructions. It's often recommended for consistency.
- Liver Function Test (LFT): Fasting is usually recommended. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as it can acutely affect liver enzymes.
For Urine Tests
- Routine Urine Analysis: Use the container provided by the lab. Collect the "mid-stream" sample—urinate a little into the toilet first, then collect the middle portion in the container. This gives the cleanest sample.
- 24-Hour Urine Collection: You will receive special instructions and a large container. You will need to collect all urine passed in a full 24-hour period. Keep the container cool (often in a refrigerator) during collection.
For Imaging & Scans
- Ultrasound (Abdomen & Pelvis): Fasting is typically required for 6-8 hours to reduce gas and get a clear image of organs like the gallbladder and liver. For a pelvic ultrasound, you may be asked to have a full bladder—drink 4-6 glasses of water 1 hour before and do not empty your bladder.
- X-Rays (Chest, Bone): Usually no special preparation. You will be asked to remove jewellery or clothing with metal in the area being scanned.
- ECG (Electrocardiogram): No preparation needed. Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit.
For Advanced Tests
- CT Scan (With Contrast): You may be asked to fast. If contrast dye is used, inform the technician if you have any kidney issues or allergies.
- MRI Scan: No dietary prep usually. You must inform us about ANY metal implants, pacemakers, or cochlear implants. You will be asked to remove all metallic objects.
